Flutist Karen Johnson, whose artistry is described as ‘exquisite’and ‘mesmerizing’ combines instrumental mastery, great beauty of sound, and a poetic sensibility in her distinctive and memorable performances.

Well-versed in the solo and chamber music repertoire, she continues championing new works and commissions by such composers as William Albright, Jeffrey Mumford, Thomas Benjam and David Froom.

A co-principal flutist of the Chesapeake Orchestra, Karen has recently teamed up with renowned pianist Carlos-Cesar Rodriguez and percussionist John Kilkenny to form the exciting Dancing Heart, an ensemble rapidly gaining popularity for its imaginative, compelling and interactive programs.

On Friday April 22 at 8 pm. the Dancing Heart Ensemble presents “Sounds ofSpring” taking you to that place in the heart where renewal begins. The program includes Scott Wheeler’s charming “Fables,” Carl Vine’s evocative flute and piano Sonata; a Spanish piano solo by Granados; Daniel Reeves’ vibe solo “Come to Me”and an uplifting collection of Appalachian Folk Songs for flute and piano. The ensemble of Karen Johnson (flute), Carlos Rodriguez(piano) and Manny Arciniega (percussion) aims to connect with and transform the audience. Individual musicians have performed with Stevie Wonder, Placido Domingo and on Netflix’s House of Cards. A New Work... A Tribute World Premiere by Israeli composer Gilad Rabinovich: Gilad has written "Elegy" for flute, piano and vibraphone.  Dancing Heart premiered this work on March 25, 2014.  "Elegy" was written as a tribute to my mother who passed away on Jan. 26, 2012.
